BUNNY INTERVIEW
By Grace (6 years old) and Jen (mom)
How long have you had your bunny?
Almost a year and a half. We adopted her for Grace’s 6th birthday.
Why did you adopt a bunny (over a cat, dog, etc.)?
My daughter loves animals wanted to have her own pet. One of the greatest things about our bunny is that she lives in Grace’s room. Also, we wanted an animal that is cuddly and can be held, but is relatively low maintenance.
Grace: I wanted a pet, and that was the perfect pet. I want a pet I can hold and I just really like her.
What has been the best thing about adopting your bunny?
Grace: I like holding her, taking care of her, refilling her water. She keeps me company at night. Sometimes I play guitar for her, sometimes I read to her. When I’m crying, I go to her. I like to hold her on my lap and pet her while I watch TV.
What is the most surprising thing about your bunny?
I am surprised at how excited she is to see us when we walk into Grace’s room. And I am really surprised at how well she uses her litter box. She’s very clean!
Grace: I’m surprised that she stayed small. And she’s not that much of a hopper.
What has your bunny taught your daughter?
I love the lesson it has taught Grace about adopting an animal in need of a home, and about what it means to take care of a pet. She gives Poppy her vegetable snack every night, and gives her fresh food and water. The first thing Grace does when she wakes up in the morning is say hello to Poppy and give her a treat.
How much money would you estimate you spend on your bunny each month?
About $20, which includes food, timothy hay, fresh vegetables, and litter for her box (we use pine pellets).
How much time is required from you each day to care for your bunny?
As little as 5 minutes – at the minimum, we give her fresh hay, vegetables, and water. About once a week we clean her cage and litter box. She also needs to be brushed regularly and to have her nails trimmed. Poppy sits very still for this – she’s the perfect bunny!
Anything else?
Grace: She’s very friendly. I want a pet like this forever. She likes to go outside in her outdoor pen we have. Anyone who is thinking about getting a bunny should get one!
