Did you know that less than 18% of family pets are adopted from shelters? In an effort to introduce people in the community to our wonderful available cats we partner with retail shops in Southern Maine. These shops are AWS Satelitte Locations, they care for the adoptable cat and help to find them homes. SEE MORE CATS FROM THE AWS SATELLITE CENTERS...
Can you help? The Animal Welfare Society is hoping to raise $2,700 to purrr-chase sanitary (and really fun!) cat beds for our Community Cat Rooms! These durable and easily sanitized 9-bed towers would allow our residents to climb, jump and nap all day long if they wanted to...after all, they're cats!
Can you help by making a donation to the AWS Comfort Fund? Keep checking back, and we'll keep you posted on our progress! To direct your tax-deductible donation to the Cat Bed project, simply select "COMFORT FUND" when making your easy online donation.
How we help our Long-Term Residents!
The primary function of the Animal Welfare Society is to provide shelter and care for homeless animals, while trying to adopt them out into loving, permanent homes. In light of this role, we recognize that some animals will have longer stays at the shelter than others, and that some animals have very little chance of being adopted due to behavioral and/or medical conditions. In order to give due consideration to the animals who have had a longer stay here at the AWS, we have formed the Long Term Resident or LTR Program.
A cat enters the LTR program after being at the shelter for 6 weeks. This program enables the staff here at the shelter to keep track of and give special consideration to the animals who have been here for an extended period of time. These activities are done in no particular order and are all performed in hopes of increasing the adoptability of the animals and to reduce the chance of stress related behavioral problems. Some activities will be done for all of the residents, while others are on a case-by-case basis.
