Wondering what it's like to have a bunny as a pet? Take it from Grace, "Anyone who is thinking about getting a bunny should get one!"

If you are interested in adopting a small animal, simply fill out and print an application, submit an application online, or stop by the shelter to complete the process. Our selection of smaller animals varies. We often have rabbits, guinea pigs, mice, gerbils, hamsters, birds and rats. The adoption fee varies depending on the animal. We provide a free health exam with your newly adopted pet, but the new owner must provide the housing.

  • Rabbit adoption fees include the spay/neuter - $60.00 each or $95.00 for a pair
  • Guinea Pigs - $15.00 each or $25.00 for a pair
  • Ferrets & Sugar Gliders - $60.00 or $95.00 for a pair
  • Hamsters, Gerbils, Mice & Rats - $5.00
  • Birds - $20.00 and up

Small animals can make great pets. They teach children to be responsible in the care of an animal that does not require the high demands of a dog or a cat. It is important to consider the animal's life span when making a decision to adopt as some of these smaller animals can live 6 - 10 years or more, and they all require proper care and nutrition. Many times, children tire of the chores of animal care so it is imperative that the adults realize that they will ultimately be responsible for the animal's care. Please call our Adoption Center at (207) 985-3244 to see if we have the right small animal for you and your family !

Check out one of our long term residents (LTR)! These great small animals have been at the shelter for over 3 months. Small animals tend to be overlooked since they are readily available at many local petstores. Please remember that the shelter has wonderful small animals that have been frequently handled and checked medically. We can help you find the right animal to suit your lifestyle!
