Nick arrived at AWS with behavioral baggage and a serious ACL knee issue. Emilie successfully petitioned our Shelter Managers for Sadie Fund money to repair Nick’s knee.  Emilie then tirelessly worked with the shepherd, until all felt he was adoptable.  But Nick was no longer a puppy.
At an AWS Board Meeting last year, Kirstin told us that Nick had finally been adopted. Applause sprung around the table.  Imagine my surprise when days later, I overheard someone at my church ask Ann how the new dog was doing.  “Nick is fitting right into the family.”  Yep, their new Nick was our ol’ AWS Nick.
Well, I’ve enjoyed sharing with Emilie, anecdotes about Ann, Mike, and Nick…how he’s bonded with them, how he’s traveled cross-country in their RV, and how their grand-daughter recently fell asleep with her arm around his neck.
For the first time since Ann and Mike adopted Nick, Emilie had the chance to see the fruits of her labor.  I don’t know what moved me more…Nick’s wagging tail or his slobbery kisses on Emilie’s face.            It is why AWS does what it does.

Here is Nick with Emilie at OgunquitFest, 2006, 2 months before his adoption.

We just wanted to thank everyone there at AWS - we have had our new Jack Russell at home with us for almost a week and we are so happy to have him as a part of our family! His name was Carver James when he was there at the shelter, but we changed it to Chief (Carver James is quite a mouthful and it didn't seem to suit him).

Chief has adjusted well to his new home and seems very happy here. He gets more attention and love than any dog could ever want. Since Christie is home during the day, he hangs out with her and they take several walks and get lots of exercise every day. We couldn't have asked for a better dog. He is housebroken (only had one accident in the house and that was on the day we brought him home, I think he was nervous) and goes to his crate at night to sleep. We're going to find an obedience class here in the Brunswick area to attend with him.

He had his first visit with the vet yesterday at the Freeport Veterinary Hospital with Dr. Tichy He received a clean bill of health and we were able to get his flea & tick meds, as well as his heartworm meds.

I've attached a few pictures of Chief. The one with the bandanna around his neck was taken right after he returned from the groomer. He was pampered with a bath and a blueberry facial. Isn't he handsome?

Thanks again for helping us find Chief and for all that you do to help all animals on a daily basis. Your staff and volunteers were amazing during our visit to AWS. You will never know how much your commitment to animals is appreciated.

Best wishes,

Armando, Christie, Deanna, Mateo and Chief

Here is our "handsome boy"!! Zaim (now Pepper) We adopted him on May 2, 2008. My husband and I have always had dogs (one of which we adopted from AWS as well) and had no idea if we would be "cat savvy". Pepper has entertained us and given us so much pleasure since bringing him home. I feel so fortunate to have found such a wonderful boy to share our home and lives with. Thank you for all that you do at AWS. Sincerely, Harry and Diane

I got Missy for my birthday last year. She is doing fine and is a wonderful cat. She makes my husband and myself very happy.

Hi Guys!

I had to write to the nice folks at the AWS because I was a long term resident there, and owe my fabulous, new, lazy cat life to you all! My name is Nani (pronounced Nah-nee, not nanny), and I was named by my owner who lived in Hawaii for a while. My name means beautiful in Hawaiian, and I feel like it, ever since being adopted. I was a stray from downtown Biddeford and was very sick when I came to the shelter... I had hair loss all over the back of my body and had an upper respiratory infection. When I was first adopted I was so scared and frightened that I wouldn't eat for a week! I finally came around with a piece of cheese pizza from Stefano's in Kennebunk!!! My owner had tried everything to get me to eat...wet food, dry food, cat treats, cheese, milk even tuna fish(of course I eat any of them now, but i was so scared). Just a reminder to all of those adoptive parents, be patient and loving and your new pet will come around and be the best thing that ever happened to you!

As you can see from my gorgeous headshot that is posted, I am feeling 110% better and have so much fur, that I don't consider myself a domestic medium haired feline anymore. I think I am officially a long haired cat, and my owner and her black clothes agree!!! I love my new home so much and couldn't thank the Animal Welfare Society enough for giving me another chance!

Love,
Nani Long Long

Thought you might enjoy these shots of Cobey, aka Beavis, a Mini Aussie that we were lucky enough to have been able to adopt from your shelter from the Buxton puppy mill.

Cobey is such a wonderful dog, and the whole family looks forward to coming home at night to his happy smiling face and wagging tail after a long day at work.

August 25, 2007 was day 5 of Buxton (the largest Puppy Mill seizure in Maine's history). That morning, I was asked to transport a Mini-Aussie, # K-33A, to the Emergency Clinic in Portland. She'd had two still-borns during the night, and it was felt the mother needed medical attention.

Well, seconds after we lifted K-33A's kennel into my station wagon, we heard a "peep, peep, peep." A puppy had just been born in my car!

While I raced to Emergency Clinic in Portland, I tuned the car radio to WBACH because I'd learned somewhere that classical music is good for kids.

Long story short, K-33A had one puppy...a really little female. I received approval to bring mother and daughter to AWS where both came under AWS care as did so many other dogs.

Buxton evolved into the experience we'll always remember, and it was weeks before I was able to follow up on K-33A and A-1. Both were doing just fine, and when I held that little one in my hand, I fell in like.

A while later, my wife and I fostered the little one, and sure enough, fell in love with A-1...Saucy (get it?). We adopted her after a month or so.

Today, a year later, on Saucy's first birthday, I find myself reflecting.

I'm convinced that had Buxton not happened...had AWS not been in a position to step up, Saucy would not have survived much less become part of our family.

So, to all the AWS Staff, and our Volunteers, thank you for Saucy. Not only those of you who helped at Buxton, but to all who devoted hours at AWS keeping the Shelter doing what it does and allowed others to be at the puppy mill.

If I liked the Staff and Volunteers at AWS before Buxton (and trust me, I did)...I feel even more affection and respect after that experience.

Again, thank you for what you did and continue to do.

Best regards,

Bob Hores
President, AWS Board

Hi,

I guess I will start with Princes Muffin who we adopted one and a half years ago. She was very tiny and could fit in the palm of our hand. She had a number of illnesses that took us 9 months of treatments to get her healthy. As you can see by her picture, she is very healthy and happy nowWe wanted a friend for her and came to Kennebunk to look for another cat, that was close to her age, size, and personality. Badella, whome we renamed Mittens, is black and white, and very lovable, and Mittens and Muffin get along very well, and are now inseperable. they eat together, watch birds from our windows, (being indoor cats only). And chase each other around the house in play. Every morning, they jump on our bed to let us know it's time for their snack, and wait for their food and water dish to be filled. Muffin has quite a belly, and I don't think it will be long before Mittens is just as plump.
We feed them Good life or Science diet food and treats. Nothing but the best for our girls. Muffin will sleep at our feet most of the time, and Mittens will sleep up by our head, sometimes she wraps her paws around our neck as if to hug us. I would say they are very happy and (SPOILED) CATS. At night they will watch tv with my husband and I and play with their toys. Mittens is quite the jumper, and they give us a lot of joy. They greet us at the door when we come home from shopping and check out the bags to see what new treat we came home with. I would say they are two very happy cats.

I hope this story helps others see the joy a cat can bring into their life, and visit the Kennebunk welfare society.

Sincerly yours,

Keith and Wendy

Hello,
I received a call asking how our new pets were doing and wanted to respond back.  We adopted a hamster and a cat named Jinx.
Jinx is the lap cat that I have always wanted.  He is on your lap almost before you sit down.  He is a little hairy, but I leave the brush next to where I sit the most and brush him.  The kids love him and he has been a joy to have.
  The hamster, Buddy...

Hamster $5.00
  Hamster supplies $126.00
  Love from a child  PRICELESS!

My 6 year old has begged for over a year for his "own pet".  So I thought a hamster would be perfect.  Then I had to find a friendly one.  So when I heard/ read ( newspaper?) that you had some I knew it was time.
Our hamster is a well loved pet by all of us.  He has two cages and tons of toys.  I bought a floor cage and lots of hamster toys and we set up a obstacle course and watch him for hours in the evenings.  He has only bitten my son once when he woke him up from sleeping with out giving him warning.  He now rubs him to wake him up first.
Thank you for our new pets we are very happy!

HELLO!  I PROMISED TO SEND SOME PICTURES OF GINGER.  SHE IS VERY SWEET AND ADAPTING GREAT.  WE LOVE HER ALREADY.  THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ALLOWING US TO GIVE HER A SECOND CHANCE AT A GOOD LIFE.
SINCERELY,
THE HOLLEY FAMILY

Hello to all of my friends at AWS! I am writing to let you know that I am doing well and love my Forever Home with Erin and Josh.

I joined their family a few weeks before Christmas and things have been great. Although, I’ll admit that there were some rocky moments. From the moment I met her, I fell in love with Erin and love every minute I get to spend with her. She is very strict and lays down the laws. But, don't think my time with Erin is all work and no play, no way José!  She and I take nice long walks, spend time playing outside in the snow, and when she can, she takes me to her office and school in Portland!  I’m incredibly protective of her and I’m often reminded , by both her and Josh that I’m sometimes OVER protective.
As you may have guessed, it’s taken me some time to warm up to Josh even though he loves me lots. Everyone gets a real kick out of how I snarl at him when he comes near when I’m with Erin. Somehow I don’t think he finds it as cute as everyone else. I have warmed up to Josh a lot and I know that he loves me tons. He takes me to his Real Estate Office where I either sit on his lap or run wild chasing the other Agents around.
Erin believes I should sleep a few nights a week in my crate to stay disciplined but Josh feels that I should take advantage of the Tempur-Pedic Sweedish Sleep System curled up between them. I tend to agree with Josh!  So now, Erin has gotten more creative with other things to get me to not fear my crate, and I think its working (though I still don't LOVE the crate). What I do LOVE is  riding in the car.  Josh and I have had many adventures traveling Maine seeing all the properties he works with. Because I love the car so much and am very well-behaved on trips, Josh and Erin have taken me to Cape Cod, the White Mountains, for ice cream at Friendly's and shopping in Freeport!
I know that my personality takes some getting used to, and I’m a bit untrusting at first, but I am much loved and very fortunate. After two stays with AWS I thank you for finding my Forever Home and I wish the same for all my four legged friends!
Hunter
